Day 2 Chihuahua
We caravan across the U.S. border into Mexico and head directly into a territory
rich in history, full of wild-west tails, of fortunes to be found, Indian
raids, revolution, and a modern day Robin Hood. After we have settled into
our full-service RV Park in Chihuahua, we have a fiesta dinner and entertainment
in store for you.
Day 3 Mennonites
This morning's city tour of Chihuahua includes viewing the murals at the State
Capital Building, a tour of the Cathedral and a visit to the Pancho Villa
Museum. The museum is one of the national hero's haciendas, and herein is
a wealth of history and artifacts from his era. One of the most interesting
pieces of history is the 1919 Dodge in which he was shot and killed. Afterwards
we will drive to Cuauhtemoc, the center for the fascinating community of Mennonites
that have made Northern Mexico their home for 80 years. Our introduction to
the Mennonites and their customs will take place tonight when we have dinner
in a Mennonite home.
Day 4 La Junta, train loading
The day had finally arrived for us to prepare for our train journey. Today
we board the Chihuahua-al-Pacifico (Chepe) Private Train bound for the Copper
Canyon. Each individual rig will be professionally loaded onto your own Private
Train Platform, from which you will enjoy unobstructed views of one of the
world's greatest rail journeys through the Copper Canyon. Prior to our departure,
on the following day, we will enjoy dinner in an orchard at the unique Apple
Restaurant.
Day 5 Creel
Creel is considered the gateway for the Tarahumara Native country and it serves
as the center of all Raramuri, as they call themselves. The Mission Store
on the main plaza of town is a gathering and trading place for this community
of natives. In Creel you will be introduced to the handicrafts fashioned by
these people, including dolls, violins and baskets. This working town was
also once the heart of the lumber-producing area in this part of Mexico. Here
we have the opportunity to tour an inhabited cave of the Tarahumara, visit
the Jesuit Mission and view Arareco Lake, all of which warrant having a camera
handy. Tonight we will get together to enjoy local entertainment, margarita's
and dinner in an area Restaurant.
Day 6 Divisadero
During the one and a half hours we spend in motion on the train today we will
be on a stretch of train tracks that loop over themselves referred to as "El
Lazo", be sure to have your camera ready for this amazing feat of engineering.
Shortly thereafter we will arrive at Divisadero, or "The lookout point"
where not only the view into the canyon but the altitude as well, will take
your breath away. We get to leisurely participate in a walking tour along
the canyon rim during the most ideal lighting for photography the day has
to offer. As the day turns to dusk we will be enjoying sunset while we have
our cook-out dinner on the rim.
Day 7 Bahuichivo
This morning allows you ample time to explore the area on your own, relax
or purchase many of the wares that the Tarahumara have on display before we
continue our train trip to spend the night at the quaint little village of
Bahuichivo before traveling through the most panoramic scenery of the Sierra
Madre the next day.
Day 8 El Fuerte
Today we experience the most spectacular portion of the railroad. You will
want to keep your cameras and binoculars handy during our decent down to almost
sea level. Around the Temoris train station is an amazing feat of engineering
as the train winds its way into the valley. At the top you can view three
levels of railroad and high on the cliff is an impressive commemorative marker
built for the dedication of the railroad by President Lopez Mateos on November
24, 1961. This marker is constructed of rails with letters 2 feet high. As
we continue our way through dramatic changes in landscape, ecosystems and
climate we will cross the highest bridge spanning the Rio Chinipas at 355
feet above the river, followed by the longest bridge above the Rio Fuerte
at 1,637 feet in length. Upon arrival in the colonial town of El Fuerte we
will be transferred to this charming and unique city for an evening walking
tour prior to our dinner with entertainment.
Day 9 Los Mochis
As we continue by train to Los Mochis (Place of the Turtles) you will be seeing
one of the most fertile agricultural areas of Mexico. The town itself has
a brief history, founded in 1903 by an American Benjamin Johnston, who established
sugarcane plantations and a sugar factory here. We will disembark the train
in Los Mochis and drive to a near-by full-service campground. You have ample
free-time in the afternoon to refurbish with new supplies as our Wagonmaster
takes us down town to the Marinero restaurant for dinner and shopping at the
Ley store.
Day 10 -15 Mazatlan
